How to Remove the Excessive White Space from the New Google+ Interface When Viewed on Large Screen Devices

Google recently started rolling out the new interface for its social network, Google+. Although, the new design is very impressive and full of new features but, still there are some things which almost all the users didn’t liked e.g. the excessive white space which is shown in new Google+ design when you open G+ on high resolution devices. There is now Firefox and Chrome plugins which hide that white space and makes the content more visible.

What is causing the excessive white space?

The new design uses the full browser and screen width of your PC and thus, if you are using a high resolution device then, you would note that the content area in Google+ has been shifted to the left and the chat is displayed on far most right side. There is a huge white space in the center, between the content and the chat area which is very annoying as nothing is displayed in that space. Here is how (refer the image below) the white space looked on my 1600 x 900 resolution PC.

The new interface was rolled out just two days ago and yet, developers have found out a way to eliminate that white space. There are now extensions for Firefox and Chrome to do the job. The image below shows how the Google+ page looks like after installing the extension in Firefox.

How does the extension work?

Although, I haven’t gone in the core files of the extension but, it seems that these extensions reduces the Google+ page’s width to some where between 900 – 1000 pixels and hence the white space goes away. You can clearly see the difference between the view before installing the extension and after installing it i.e. the whole content which previously was on the left side has now been shifted to the center of the page which eliminates the excessive white space.

[Video] Tutorial on How to Disable TimeLine and Switch to Old Facebook Profile Page in Google Chrome

Facebook Timeline can be switched back to old Facebook Profile in Chrome. The switching needs some code insertion and if done properly, old Facebook Profile can be attained in just a few moments.

We have recently posted a way of switching TimeLine and getting old Facebook Profile back in Firefox using an extension but, Google Chrome users are not lucky enough to get an extension but, there is an alternate way of inserting a small code and getting old Facebook profile back.

You can follow the instruction given below to switch to the old Facebook Profile in Google Chrome and there is also a tutorial video embedded at the end.

Disclaimer: Using this trick to get the old Facebook Profile Page may change the overall style of other websites. We strongly recommend turning that option off while visiting other websites. In case of viewing or other problems, Tech LineUp/knowledge-news.com won’t be held responsible.

Instructions:

  • Close all your Chrome Browser windows
  • After closing, right click the browser shortcut/quick launch icon and click ‘Properties’.
  • A pop-up window would open. Under ‘Shortcut’ Tab you would see a box named as ‘Target’.
  • You would see the location of your Chrome installation folder. The end of that location would be like this

chrome.exe

  • You will insert the code after that.
  • Now, before inserting the code you need to copy the right one and then paste it.
  • See the code below:

1-        XP Users use this code:

-user-agent=”Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)”

2-        Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 users can use the code below:

- -user-agent=”Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)”

  • Just copy the appropriate code and paste it after the ‘chrome.exe’ with a space between both e.g.

chrome.exe – -user-agent=”Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)”

  • Press ‘ok’
  • Now, go to your Facebook Profile and if done properly, your old profile page would be back
  • Congratulations!
  • To get the timeline back just remove the code you inserted and your timeline would be back.

Note: This tweak only changes the timeline in your browser i.e. you will see your and others old Facebook Profiles while everyone else would see your normal Timeline view.
